GND 313 - J'assume by Pika-la-Cynique GND 313 - J'assume by Pika-la-Cynique
Preparations also going on on the lads' side of things....

Cultural notes!

Yeah, going for a rather franco-french joke there. Or rather, well. You know (of course you do) how the French have the reputation of being rude and snobby and all that - well, the thing is, for the French, that's *Parisians*. And it would shake out, I suppose, that many foreign tourists mostly just do Paris; ergo, small experience pool and national stereotype. La capitale and "la province" heartily bash on one another. (Also, the usual images of stressed-out, impatient big-city-dwellers hurrying irritably past visiting rubes and loitering tourists come into play.)

Now, the fact that French waiting staff get a better minimum wage and do not literally have their livelihood depend on tips.... *le socialiste side-eye* ... does mean there is less emphasis on all that smiling subservience and the kind of client deference and uber-attentiveness you get in the US (or Japan, say). Tips really are a polite/thoughtful extra, for an average drinks/meal out bill, that are not generally expected of, say, a tableful of cheap students. Which can naturally lead to some culture shock. On the other end of that service industry spectrum, it is little exaggeration to say that the average waiter working the terrasses of a somewhat central bar/café in Paris will indeed act like he is being massively imposed upon by having to bring you your €7.50 expresso and generally be pretty brusque.

(I mean, to be perfectly character-relevant, a fancy place for wealthy patrons the likes of which Vicomte Moneybags would tend to frequent, would, on the other hand, have exactly the kind of unctuous and flawless service you'd be paying for, no problem.)

Also, fyi, "assumer" doesn't quite mean the same as it does in English.

I feel that the good Vicomte went up in Jareth's estimation for a moment there...I love these little character moments. :)

The final punchline made my day. I mean more than a new page of GND already did. Thank you for gracing us with such a well drawn well thought comic. Really where will I be without great drawn fan fiction with private jokes I understand?

As excited as I am about this page (and I so so so am!!!!) everytime I try to imagine Jareth and Sarah tourist-ing around Paris, I just have that song from Anastasia in my head: "Paris Holds The Key To Your Heart" and there is much laughter and smiling lol.

Jareth, how far you've come. Your old self would have bogged Raoul for the comment of "voluntary" date. I personally want to see that. But I'm a girl who holds grudges. LOL! Yes, the "white knight" that gets the girl... LOL!
But jumping on.... Jareth and Sarah on a date in Paris!!! YAY!!!!

You have indeed stumbled into a long-running crossover fancomic feature-starring the Labyrinth cast. :D And I'm tickled you could tell the likeness.

I always figured part of the stereotype was due to the fact that the waiters in question are in a customer service position in a city known for its tourist draw, and considering how some tourists can act when jet-lagged and determined to wring as much of a quality vacation as they can out of their trip for what they paid, a reflexive wince when an order is placed by an American is understandable.

Not saying Canadians are perfect either, but watching someone try to recall enough high school French to place their order is probably good for a laugh.

Though I am, like others, eager to see Jareth and Sarah date in Paris, I really enjoyed this page! You again proved your masterful skills in dialogue, even when it's casual. Jareth's voice is as flawless as ever, and though they haven't spoken much at all previously, I think that Raoul is holding his own! (a weird friendship on the horizon??)

P.S. I'm not a fan of de Chagny in canon, but you've converted me with GND. Well done!

Loved the natural flow of conversation between the two. The joke was well played and even the non traveler sort like me caught it.

Two thumbs way up.

Uh, Rauol, sweetie, I don't think a fudged memory quite equates to nearly frying Sarah's brain...

Huh. My experiences, on the whole, when in Paris, have been unusually good, then, I guess. I admit, I haven't been in a decade, but of the two times I went, everyone in Paris and the nearby area were very good, save for ONE exception and I think it's because we accidentally interrupted a date to ask for directions, after we'd gotten lost.

So... What would be Positive Social Standing in Paris? I mean I guess tip big but then you run the risk of looking like an easy meal, and to be fair I have no earthly clue as to what a "Big Tip" in Paris would be.

Basically I'm a strong believer in "Positive Customer/Employee" Relations even overseas and would rather not find out that half the waitstaff have spit in my soup.

Two updates in two weeks, so so grateful! And we're in PARIS!!!

I went to Lyon for a few days in 2016 and even though I'd heard that the "rude French" stereotype really just applied to Paris, I was amazed at how kind & open everyone was, especially with my very clumsy attempts to speak French (my Brazilian husband spoke it better than I did, but we tended to rely a lot on the kindness & patience of the people we encountered).

Well, at least they're attempting to be open and honest here. They may not need to be friends, exactly, but they do need to be able to be civil for the sake of the girls. And I would really like to see a date between Sarah and Jareth that goes at least 95% well. No interference from nosy friends in ninja spy mode or well-meaning, but unnecessarily protective wizards. Just a nice date. I'd say no idiotic or annoying comments from Jareth, but, well, he's Jareth. He'll probably say at least one thing that gets her a little riled up.

HAha I like how Raoul is trying to help. I so see Jareth bogging everyone he met in Paris. You don't often get a civil chat between heroes and villains, so this was a fun read.

So, I've been on and off this website for many years but what has always remained consistent was my attention to this comic. When I was in highschool I was SO OBSESSED with Labyrinth *cough* Jareth *cough* and, subsequently, David Bowie. Finding this comic was like a dream come true for me. You capture all these characters personalities so well I could actually see them in the scenarios you create. I just thought I should finally out myself as one of your silent stalkers and thank you for creating something so entertaining! I've enjoyed this adventure for as long as you've been creating it and I thank you again for continuing it after so long.

Ok Ill go back into my dark, silent, void now.

"On the one hand, you're the white knight gets the girl protagonist and foils the subteranian villain, but on the other hand you do annoy Eric, so..." that is a golden line

though I must say, I think jareth should give the ladies some alone time, just a Little, even though it is Paris

I also hope for a small shoutout to GND 63, just for the fun of it

Lived in the vicinity of Paris for five years - never had a problem with rude.  I understood the expectations, I didn't play the idiot tourist - no problem. Maybe because I'm from Boston and spent time in New York.  I do however have a problem with American tourists and their 'assumptions'.  Not all mind you but being American and watching them gives me migraines from time to time. If Jarreth has a problem it might be because the French lopped off the last 'Highness' a few hundred years ago

Poor Erik though; psychos don't seem to tolerate one another well, do they?

Tbh, I never understood the spiky Parisian stereotype, or French people telling me Paris rent must be killing me. Once you've dealt with New Yorkers or NYC rent, nothing intimidates you after that.
