I read through every single comic strip of this in three days.  I absolutely love what you've done!  I've never been interested in comics before, but this was witty and catchy.  You are too cool.

Hullo there! So I have a bit of an over-thought genealogical question for you- as much as I'm sure Jareth despises adores Step-Daddy Darkness, I noticed his real father has never really been brought up in-comic (excepting that one cruel discussion about his frozen bits).  BUT ANYWAY, do you have anyone in mind for who he could be, in your 'verse?  Because I remember reading a discussion somewhere where you voiced the opinion that Jareth definitely has some human in him and is not 100% fae.  Would that bit of human happen to be his father?  Or would it be waaay back in the ancestral line?  (On a related note, I wonder if having the human bit closer to the surface, as it were, would make him a little less alien to other humans?  And vice versa.)  Just a query for the last of these hot summer days. :)

A long time ago, I posted this.... pika-la-cynique.deviantart.com…
(new video link? www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKfbSH… )

So, what species exactly that makes his father is rather debatable. But yes, I definitely believe Jareth has some bastardry in his lineage that is relevant to his appearance (the mismatched eyes and his being a fascinating-looking fellow but not exactly true Glamour-reeking levels of inhumanly perfect), and low or at least viewed-as-unimpressive status (and resultant peevish attitude to life). Possibly maybe helps him thrive in a not-fully-magical environment - the Building is definitely not mundane and run on the cold logic of physics, but the present-day-ish setting does mean there's a lot of iron and pollution about. But on the plus side, yep, not being True Fae definitely helps him make some sense out of Human Morals For Dummies and his courting...

..I cannot tell you how much this made me giggle and smile when I read it.  Thank you thank you for this! How does your brain come up with these marvelous cross-over ideas? :)

That's interesting to me that you define Jareth as having a "viewed-as-unimpressive status" (assuming, at least, in the GND 'verse?) what with all the dark!fic about him and elsewhere his father actually being the Erlkönig.  I was wondering if you have your own personal 'verse for any and all of your Labyrinth related works?  Like if the Jareth in your fic Underside has any relation to the one in GND or the T-Shirt series?

Ohhh, do not ask me about my headcanons...

Seriously. They are fuzzy on the important stuff.
Like I said, I embroider on his appearance to think mixed lineage. I can cobble together the idea that Jareth isn't *happily* King of the Goblins what with his obvious exasperation with his dim minions at points in the film, and Bowie's own take on the character he mentioned in interviews - that he thinks Jareth doesn't want to be doing this job "and would rather be in Soho" (projecting much there ducky my love?) - which of course begs the question of what or who is making him do it anyway. There's that wonderfully petulant, teenage, angry way Jareth dismisses the concept of friendship when he is needling Hoggle. And I rather like how far AsheRhyder took that aspect of his court being the Unwanted.
On the other hand there's a lot of folklore has some seriously creepy child-stealing figures, that's an old and potent fear of mankind's. So I can totally get fics that play him as far more powerful than seen in-film, and the idea that he was somehow bound by Sarah's playbook/expectations/Certain Powers/rules of engagement for dealing with minors during their first match and that he could be much nastier if unfettered - that's what I took away from the fic that made HIM the Erlking, and what I was going with for 'Underside'.

So all that adds up to a sense that yes, Jareth is underestimated as a magical player... and if one goes with traditional Faerie tropes then his kingdom and schtick is rather lackluster for a race that is all about style and Glamour and deadly elegance, so I'd see social stigma at work there. (Have you read Shards of a Dream...? manages to combine those two ideas most marvelously.)(also, any Dresden crossovers are good at placing him understandably on the Faerie power scale, usually....)

But then again, PG Henson puppets and silliness! I do love how goodfic for the Labyrinth fandom can be chillingly hideous JS darkfic AND flirting over terrible double-entendres while dodging demented poultry, and both those extremes can gell as convincing continuations...

Not so much that idea of hidden powerful/nasty depths in GND, where the Fail Field is as much about causing pratfalls and foot-in-mouth outbreaks as it is busy making the whole set-up *work*, this place where serious villains and out-and-out murderers just share sitcom hijinks and no one really questions how they ended up living together anyway, and characters are aware of their media ratings.... I wasn't just teasing with 'Brink', though. GND-Jareth has some demons of his own, and somewhat less long-term wisdom and patience, because of his more silly/impulsive/mischievous characterization due to Rule of Funny - the trade-off for that snappier, gag-friendly take on him is to have made him something a bit like Tinkerbell? a one-strong-emotion-at-a-time sort of thing, leading to rather volatile moods.... and sometimes his frustration and heartache threaten to make something drastic happen. Like I was discussing with someone else, GND-Jareth is an irrepressible optimist in all these years of pestering Sarah, and generally is buoyed enough by the meta jokes that the fanservice is on his side and that I ultimately ship them and truly believes that their Happy Ending will be worth all the aggro; but if that hope of his is ever properly snuffed, he will go to jagged little pieces at a most destructive rate of expansion.

T-Shirt Jareth is a bit dusty in my mind, alas! But while he has his dark corners and wicked fondness for deliberately testing Sarah's fortitude to his applied creepiness, he is more tempered with patience and is resolutely playing nice because that is how he wants it to go. (That characterization sort of had to creep up on me since that whole fic just started out as pervy banter and Slap-Slap-Kiss before it started trying to get a little more fine-tuned in motivations and all...)
