The Silver Hilt - illustration by Pika-la-Cynique The Silver Hilt - illustration by Pika-la-Cynique
A vignette illustration for uber-massive class project which was illustrating an entire short story or fairytale. I picked The Silver Hilt by Ferenc Molnar, which was pretty obscure but really rather witty. It's about an alchemist who claims to have found a formula to make his employer, the Scarlet Count, irresistible to women... so long as he keeps a firm grasp the bespelled hilt of his sword--nudge-nudge, wink-wink... ^^;
You can check out the rest of the illustrations on my blog [link]

Watercolours and coloured inks, and hell was it good to get away from the computer for a while...

This is beautiful! I love the softness and blending. Watercolor is so easily one of my favorite mediums. The beard and eyes are by far my favorite feature.

Thank you!
*snortle* The codpiece... heheheh... When I was researching the historical costumes for those illustrations, I came across an article explaining the evolution of codpiece fashion in Tudor times... it was really a rather fascinating read. =D

I love his crazy hair and his little eyes. I love your watercolours, they're really characteristic. I've never heard the story before, it sounds....interesting..in a sort of very obvious metaphors kinda way.....like those Inuit storys in the Angela Carter book, lol. Are you putting the rest of the pictures up here?

Thanks. :aww:
I came across the story very randomly in a collection of short stories at my rather prim and proper aunt's house, and it cracked me up no end.
No, I'm not going to post the whole thing on dA... like it says, the rest is on my blog.

Oh you're absolutely awesome with the watercolours! The fact that I love fairytales of all sorts only makes this project even more fun to view! wow... :clap: Have you ever done any real commissions for book illustration?

Thank you muchly.
Nope, haven't done any "real" books as an illustrator... Still in art school, and despite specializing in animation rather, I'd love to. =D
(Still... you should've seen what some of my classmates turned in... *frustrated sigh*)
