GND97 - Rooftop Epilogue: EC by Pika-la-Cynique GND97 - Rooftop Epilogue: EC by Pika-la-Cynique
... You can defintely make a case for Author On Board when it comes to Christine's attitude regarding the pending sequel.

I apologize if the comic spoilerizes anything for people, and I'll admit I'm not quite sure of my info. But the wiki tells me the plot of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Love Never Dies'</i> will be leering heavily towards that of 'Phantom of Manhattan' by Forsythe.... So Yeah. I can't see Christine being too thrilled by that. And the whole "their son is actually Erik's cos Raoul got his goolies shot off in hunting accident and cannot father an heir" is like: yays yet more fop-emasculating, and HELLO SQUICK.

And while part of me thinks it somewhat pretentious and daft that the characters of the fancomic claim to prefer living in said fancomic than go on to their canon destinies in a sequel, I suppose I am influenced by some of the Official Fanfiction University... fics, where, for example, the Harry Potter cast would brace every so often for the massive changes brought by the latest book release and that could lead to some meta yet moving drama.

Also, this page was initially a lot more somber and somewhat lacking in punchline until I decided to screw Cerberus Syndrome.

And I'm not entirely sure whether Erik's thoughts in that last are more of the "YAY I SCORED" or "OMG I scored and I HAVE NO MEMORY OF THIS FACT ARGH" variety right there...

I prefers to think he's that traumatized by her death, myself. We're talking about a psyche that practically willed itself to death in the Leroux novel.

A wonderful, thoughtful, and sophisticated examination of the characters and the consequences of a sequel to their story... followed immediately by a hilarious final panel. Nice mood whiplash.

Yeah some of us are going to pretend that sequel never existed.

You know, I have to say that I'm usually against ErikxAnyone, but I could actually believe it in this scenario. Christine's always cared about him as a person (for better and for worse). If he could appreciate that friendship for what it is, I could see him eventually finding a fuller happiness with someone else in the 'verse and learn to be happy that Christine is happy. Make it happen! If the good ol' Commodore can find happiness, I'm sure Erik can too.

Well, having seen's not a case of "raoul got his goolies shot off"'s a matter of she had second thoughts and had a one-night stand with him after going off with Raoul at the end of phantom (and why not? Raoul is lame :P ), and got pregnant from that. But, despite said one-night, Erik felt Raoul was the better choice for her life, ran off before she woke up, and faked his own death to escape to America with the Girys. Flash-forward 10 years later to the sequel. Raoul has become a gambler, implied alcoholic and is generally a jerk (though he had his jerk moments in PoTo...what with his whole seeming to think Christine is a nutter imagining this phantom business...) but yeah...the end is a let-down. But I guess ALW can't stand for the phantom to actually get a happy ending ~_~;

One of the reasons this comic works so well, besides the expressive art and the brilliant humor, ... in fact the MAIN reason this comic succeeds is because of the sophisticated and tender characterizations of this well known cast.

We already loved them, and it would have been easy to dangle fanbait and simply indulge in fanservice fetishes. But you obviously love them too, and have clearly thought through and layered their stories and personalities. This isn't just fanservice, this is a lovely set of character studies with love, humor, and a lot of glitter thrown in.

Thank you for giving these characters the care and attention they deserve. You are wonderful.

Erik's thoughts would be along a "I scored RETROACTIVELY?? So I don't actually get to have sex, we're just going to go along and say it happened and that will make it real?"
Probably the latter option then.

... see that search bar in the upper corner of your browser...? :|

I'm sorry for singling out one person to snap out when I get a lot of comments like this but fer crying out loud, information gathering is a valuable skill and it's not like it's that hard to search something on wikipedia or google. That's how I found out about it enough to make it a plot point here, with no intention of ever seeing or reading it...

I don't care how pretty the sequel songs were, Erik won nothing more than Christine's first night (yay reducing the chick to a sexual prize) and one messed-up kid. He didn't win her, she DIED. And if you have to make Raoul an emasculated, alcoholic, physically abusive womanizer to validate Christine preferring her esrtwhile psychologically-manipulative, 30-years-older, freakishly-deformed, sociopathic murderer - whom in original canon she DOES admit she will always love, regardless, but knows is a toxic life choice - then I personally feel that bashing the "competition" into the dirt so thoroughly is a very cheap and contrived way to make Erik "win" by default rather than by his own merits or any valid, freely-made choice of Christine's, and that is disrespectful to *him* - let alone to the female character. Who IS, beeteedubs, the main character of the novel, incidentally. And who deserves to live, make her choices, and not have her judgement so utterly shat upon ("silly bint, we phangirls all knew Raoul was no good from the start...") by a money-grubbing subpar sequel.
I have all manner of sympathies and soft feelings for the lovelorn Phantom, in despite of his very reprehensible actions, but at the end of the day this is Christine's story too/first; and pity - even the of purest, warmest, non-condescending strain - is not love, nor a reason to throw away her own life.

Apologies, because you are not the only person to voice this opinion and I didn't jump down every commentor's throat. And the bottom line remains, lump it; this fancomic supports Christine/Free Will, and her canon *choice* is sanity and life with Raoul.

I haven't seen the sequel and having read some plot summaires decided not to be a little trying Pandora and distort the picture of music, story and characters I love so much XD
But then agin, say what You want, Raoul sucks in the book as well! I mean, reading the parts in which he pities himself -cause Christine has exchanged with him 100 instead of 200 words, while having in mind what Eric was going through his entire life, wa making me SICK. I liked th Perian, though, he was cool ^^
But I realy like Your point on Christine... I like her, she's unlike most of 19th/beggining of 20th century heroine, who can only swoon and wait to be rescued... End of the day she herself saved everyone+the Opera house <proud of being a woman ^^>
And as for Eric... aaaaahhhh, weellll... <looks down and blushes sweetly>
And now sth completely different XD
I jut realy wanted to congratulate You great idea joined with great performance. I mean, I know many people (ihncluding my three parallel selves XD) who have such mixtures of favourite characters, but it's hard to find someone who can actually put their ideas on paper like You do... Basically, I only created an account, beacue I wanted to thank You for all th lift ups the comics gave me in my sad-cause-thinking-too-much-and-listening-to-PinkFloyd'sTheWall life XD I jut realy love this nice madhouse and it's citizents, with J&S and E&Ch on top, as well as all the rest of the guys, Norrington, Sweeney, mrs. Lovett...
Thanks a lot and may Your goblins remain polite XD

OK Ok! jeeezuuuuz....sorry i like things that everyone hates...i just really look at things in a different way than example i never usually pay attention to plot flaws unless they shout at me and are dead obvious and sometimes as long as i like the characters i still may not pay it close attention...i'm just weird that way...but as for LND i guess i just picture it as a giant stand alone fan fiction made by sir andrew loud webber and thats it i don't think it belongs alongside POTO AT ALL! but alone on its own its pretty awesome except for Under A Moonless Sky....not a fan of that please don't be angry at me for liking something that seems to be raping POTO i just look at it from a different POV

'Oh selfish Christine. Having Raoul mindwiped to keep him.' Those words were all that went through my mind when i read this page of the comic. Just make a choice already woman! You've proven you have a strong will ^^
Pika-la-Cynique Featured By Owner Sep 30, 2011  Professional General Artist
True. At the time, however, your humble servant, and by proxy Christine, couldn't face the long and emotionally draining conversation required to explain the situation to Raoul, who was, understandably, rather wound up and freaked out by the whole experience. Hence, the sweeping-it-under-the-carpet mindwipe.
Current events have brought an opportunity to 'fess up, however.

You. Are. AMAZING. Your Erik is... is... i don't even know a phrase to describe how... OH SCREW IT! I just love it, him, you. Thank you.
fatal-rob0t Featured By Owner Aug 31, 2011
I like Phantom of Manhattan. I don't mind them having sex in that. *shrug*.....but at least the characters of the other characters weren't effectively ASSASSINATED. Love Never Dies is a blight and the only good things are the music and set and costuming. UGH!

Also, in Manhattan, Raoul had his manbits taken away because of some gunshot injury while trying to save someone. I don't like the little man, but I don't like the idea of him being emasculated either, however I can take That over him becoming a drunk, gamboling jackass. At least Manhattan was Subtle. At least Manhattan let him lose those bits because he was being heroic! At least he didn't become a raging ass! At least in the end he was tragic and heartbreaking!

..............sorry, I've ranted my frustrations to you. As always I do love your comics though I sort of neglect reading them more often than not. ^^
