GND240 - Passe d'armes by Pika-la-Cynique GND240 - Passe d'armes by Pika-la-Cynique
OK, wee reminder [because it has been MONTHS between pages]: they are talking about Jareth's choice of junior attendees at the ball. One is to understand that at this point, Tiny Tim and the Little Match Girl have been sent home/away.

Ok, I usually keep the pretentious elegant French phrases for Fantôme cast-centric pages, but I like the imagery too much. Is a swanky way to say ''sparring'', really, and that is what is going on here. They both landed, and parried, a few blows there...

So GND-Jareth has never really tried to stick to those traditional Fair Folk rules and entrapments, and in continuity has been thanked by Sarah a few times previously that never became a magical big deal. So his line here is a fairly half-assed attempt at pulling that one to see if it takes; also, I recently wolfed down Seanan McGuire's October Daye novels - rec'd by one lovely person here, gifted me by 2 others, oodles of gratitude all around - and the theme was fresh in mind.
Anyway, Sarah no-sells that one attempt at being a little creepifying. And then.... you know what, that might just be progress right there.

IF Jareth behaves around the rest of the guests. Oh wait....

Update!! Finally! I'm done with my deadline, and Louisa scraped up the time and wheeee vaycay.
Have yourself a whole comic of JS-ness.

This is a work of fanart, and only intended for shits and giggles and vicarious fangirl thrills. Not my characters, no profit being made.

Panel nine is just gorgeous. I want to reach into my computer and make out with him. Those cheekbones. That hair. How DOES the girl resist? Besides that, I love how it shows a moment of vulnerability. All the panels before (since Jareth's arrival at the ball at least) Jareth has his slightly/slanted half-lidded Fae eyes on. He's just messin with Sarah, and if he can trick some kind of commitment out of her so much the better (for both of them) (***everything I do I do for you***)

But then, when she admits "we both want to" it changes everything. We see the stakes are raised. Jareth sees that this could be a moment of real change between them and you can almost see the thought bubble pop up "DO NOT FUCK THIS UP" and then, of course, he covers it with that sly remark and cheeky grin.

I also love that when he starts to go all Dark! Jareth in 6 Sarah just "nopes" and shuts that down. Jareth is trying SO HARD to handle himself, but for moments when he can't, Sarah's there to keep him in line. They're so perfect for eachother <3

Aw bless, lookit the lovely comment picking up on everything I wanted to express.

I'll just slightly modify one observation, although I am tickled pink you noticed the whole shifty-eyes thing, is that part of Jareth's ''Fae eyes'' thing is also reserve and poker-face plottiness. There is certainly a large part of messin with Sarah as a motivation, but this whole ballroom spell is a unique conjuncture and opportunity for one sneaky Goblin King and although Sarah tends to liberally sprinkle wrenches in all his cunning plans (and sometimes flip over the entire table...), he does have an interesting hand of cards right now.

But thanks for all that lovely lovely feedback.

Yet I presume Legolas' current facial expression is somewhere between GrumpyCat and Beaker. Wisely hidden behind Eponine's hair. :giggle: ;P

"... Because we both want to, Jareth - no creepy coercive trickery or impaired consent." - As far as I am concerned she is liek soo refering to their kiss. Good girl.
Pika-la-Cynique Featured By Owner Jan 28, 2015  Professional General Artist
Now I do believe what I had in mind as prompting Sarah's line about impaired consent and coercive bullshit was more a recollection of the original peach fever dream, and his attempts to dream-nap/''woo'' her back when she got Bucket'd, rather than that big damn kiss - though you are right to call it out for not happening in an entirely aboveboard situation, I think in Sarah's own rather devious headspace, she is not too begrudging of him for that one: she was in a pickle, and chose to bargain with him, of course he went for the advantage (Recall her line back then is ''Just a kiss? Fine, but - '' She felt he could've pressed worse. ) Y'know, besides the whole denial of actually hella enjoying it, and feeling emotionally compromised afterwards, that's not an incident that still smarts, for her, truly. Like sure, objectively, it's another Asshole stroke on his scorecard, but it doesn't really feed into her genuine pain-and-resentment pool.

(aaaaand that was over 5 years ago what what what has this monster fanwork become....)

Thank you for the detailed information on "What I thought while writing GND 240", especially though that page is already several months old! :rose:

"I think in Sarah's own rather devious headspace, she is not too begrudging of him for that one: she was in a pickle, and chose to bargain with him, of course he went for the advantage (...)"
I think we had a similar exchange about the kiss years ago, and you reasoned very similarly back then. :)

"(aaaaand that was over 5 years ago what what what has this monster fanwork become....)"
When you started, for how long did you think it would last? Somehow touching to see that GND as well as Roommates is still going strong, even though more than a few other "classic" artists left dA for tumblr or just for good.
I think after so many years and so many characters would have lost the overview for my own canon by now. Unless I neatly kept a book with short summaries and the most important story twists and current character constellations (including hand-drawn maps with lots of arrows :) ). Which you might actually have...?

I knew when I started that this was a Good Idea kinda project. I'd always been good at funny little comics, and from the moment Ashe brought the love interests into Roommates the ideas started bubbling up. But... I don't know what I was thinking at first, regarding goals or endgame. The early years I was bouncing off Roommates' plots mostly... then there were divergences, 2-pagers, mini-arcs.... for several years I was often on the move between homes and job assignments, and spent so much time creative daydreaming on the trains and filling up my notebook... Of course in the original giggly rush of inspiration back in '07, one of the first 5 doodled pages had J&S getting it on in the linen closet... ^^; Then comes the logic of ''ok but for this storyline to work they need to still be antagonistic so this plot point gets pushed back...'' and stuff like that... Definitely having acquired a large and enthusiastic readership kept/keeps me at it.
I dunno. I reread myself sometimes, but I'm generally pretty clear on who said and did what, overall. I think I've only plot-tripped myself a few times - one niggling thing quite recently, actually, because the Ballroom arc has several long-determined story points to hit but some of the rest has been spontaneous filler...
Chepseh Featured By Owner Feb 5, 2015
Wow, Thank you for that look behind the creative curtain! :) Your explanations made me go back to read the earliest GND chapters. Yes, the development from funny one-pagers to longer and longer arcs is cleeearly visible. - I mean that in a neutral way, I also still like the earlier stuff! Also because the early GND had a certain "fluffy" lightness which had to lessen inevitably when character development and relationshippy delevopment got more spotlight. Though GND is still far from being a "grim"-serious story, of course.

"Of course in the original giggly rush of inspiration back in '07, one of the first 5 doodled pages had J&S getting it on in the linen closet..."

I knew it. :giggle: (And I think you even hinted to this in an earlier conversation we had once upon a time)
Don't forget to upload that one day ;) ;) , perhaps the day when you might finish (WHAT?) the series.

Oh god, Cheryl's face XD!!! She and Leggy have gotta be one of my favorite ships, mostly because it might be the only OCXCanon pairing I like. It's because, unlike most Mary Sues people pair with canon, Cheryl actually has a unique  personality, one that I think is funny, can relate to, and is a good match for someone like Legolas. Great job on creating such a character that I love, Even if she is a minor.

The bottom four panels (especially the top center in that row) has immediately drawn me back in to every Labyrinth and Jareth. That is an absolutely astonishing expression you have conveyed! I keep coming back to look at it again and again. Being able to Bowie and Jareth at once and separately is messing with my head. The level of of amazement and appreciation he has is just a wow factor!

I am so in love with this page I can't even.

I mean, the art for one thing. It goes back and forth between the usual GND style and a more comic-book style and I. Love. It.

And then the coloring, IYEEEE! Gonna have to go drop a million kudos on Louisa.

And then the "sparring" and the body language and the dialogue and dropping fae references left and right and JARETH'S FACE IN EVERY PANEL and I'm just head over heels.

Thanks. Much appreciated comment.

Possibly things look more comic-y because I need for GND Sarah to be looking a little less childish, but without perma-Straight Art.

Why is Sarah upset about Tiny Tim/Match Girl? So long as they weren't wished away to become goblins, it should be okay.
Pika-la-Cynique Featured By Owner Aug 2, 2014  Professional General Artist
She kinda suspects Jareth had them there to sort of make fun of her ''happy endings for characters from sad canons'' party theme, because they are kinda uber-pathetic and schmalzy; and looked ridiculous dancing.

The plunging backline of Sarah's dress makes me think of Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire, except more modest...

There's an amazing French-language graphic novel published presently called Freaks' Squeele. Lots of parody on classic superhero/manga tropes, fantabulous dynamic artwork and a whole array of diverse and equally sexy ladies. One of the main characters got something plunging almost to tailbone recently for a party (while strictly turtleneck in front, all in severe black) as part of a distraction ploy. I liked a lot.
(Le Grand Blond is one of those French classics I have yet to catch up on.)

Such a splendid blend of drawing and coloring.  (Blissful sigh of happiness. )

Question though:  when Jareth is speaking of admissions, did he mean "indebtedness"? (as in owing someone a debt.  6th panel.)  His squiggly font sometimes makes for a little difficulty in reading, but I'd swear it looks like "indeptedness.

Perhaps it's just his British/Goblinish accent. :D

Yeah, GND!Sarah is one of the few characters I've seen pull off "tsundere" well.

But, to be fair, training a fae to respect mortal sensibilities(no matter how absurd) is also a better _justification_ for tsundering than anything else I've seen.
