Small question…. Is the sound effect BAMF implying that he is (in this scene, cuz Fail field) That he is a Bad Ass Mother F**ker?
Merely curious.

Facial expressions tho
And in the canon of pop romance media, there is much to be said (rather, there is much that has already been said and analyzed and written) about how the Pride and Prejudice storyline is the ultimate for romance story line formatting--hate, then learning, then love--so there is a goodly bit of good storytelling here to that callback and utilization of the grudge (because the circumstances are different and there's been character development and none of this needs to be said because the artist already knows it and I'm just analyzing out loud and talking to myself for my ooown sake and I'll be quiet now.)

Kyndsie Featured By Owner Jul 2, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
I have nothing new to say about all of the awesomeness of the drawing and colouring and facial expressions and and and... (the CAPE!!!!)

But about Jareth's facial expression and closing lines. I think that he's truly hurt that Sarah STILL wasn't about to call on him for help. She would rather have been buried in war-bent, Rosalinda-trained Blikkins than to have called on him. *sigh* I feel for him in the last couple of panels for that VERY reason.

Oh, and Luna, is this a better visual angle and outfit for you to see why Sarah described him has encountering an Engorgement Charm that went very very wrong (or very very right)? Granted that her reaction would mostly have been about the Grand!Impressive!Entrance and the effect that magic glitter can have... still. Not even Luna is completely impervious to Sexy!Powerful!Entrance, which BTW Erik and Christine, this entrance is waaaaaaaaaaay more than a 6. This entrance...
(wait for it)
goes up to 11.
(Yes, I did it. I couldn't resist. But seriously, I can't feel ashamed about it.)

Re: Jareth's fuel for acting cold/snippy here. I think there is more anger than hurt that the stupid stubborn girl gets herself into such a fix, and less of the genuine but several parts selfish upset that ensued at the Rooftop Incident... bloodthirsty blikkins just don't make for such a satisfying and swoony romance rescue as Jareth would've enjoyed in a situation that involved A. just Sarah (none of her freak friends to worry about and distract her), B. in bondage, and C. with the extra fun of his adversary being Erik and stars know he'd enjoy an excuse to let rip for every single past aggravation between those two roommates. It appealed to his idiom much more. The chikins, on the other hand, are an eternal sore spot. Which is why he flips out in the following page when Sarah points out the intrinsic ridiculousness of the situation he is very much aware of.

But basically final-panel Jareth is reaching back into that grudge possibly to try and evoke enough overall frustration/impatience/criticism and resentment of Sarah's dealings with him to possibly tip into Dark! mode. That's also why he held back from showing up until the last minute here, because he still hadn't made up his mind on how it should go - coming to the rescue forces his hand, which annoys him. He is still very much it-could-go-either-way here regarding his temptation to go Dark - hence the middling-stained speech bubble. I'm not sure it was that obvious, but that's what Sarah judged and handled perfectly in the following page, by pettily needling then soothing him back into their flity-bickering usual rappport - because they way it goes between those two, "you cowered before me I was frightening" - if she followed his cue here and allowed herself to feel intimidated or guilty, he would promptly riff on that and go with the Dark options.
Kyndsie Featured By Owner Jul 3, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Ahhh! That makes so much more sense. It still really is about pride and appearance for Jareth so much of the time. And since he only reluctantly accepted advice from Sarah about the whole Blikkin situation anyway... yeah, touchy subject.

So, despite his willingness to ask Erik for advice / help, Jareth hasn't firmly decided against his Dark options. Rats! but I'm not surprised.
Pika-la-Cynique Featured By Owner Jul 4, 2013  Professional General Artist
Jareth certainly heard and accepts and knows that doing anything Dark to Sarah would be a horrrible, awful, no-good idea. He is also however by nature a selfish, magically-overpowered, none-too-moral Fae king and NOT doing something immediately gratifying is an unnusual and straining state of affairs for him. Temptation is supposed to be a tool to him, and he has little practice in resisting it himself... - or had, rather; to be perfectly fair to him, most of his time in the Building has been learning to resist various wicked urges (to drive Erik spare-er, to mess with poorly guarded dreaming minds...). This one's a doozy, though...
Kyndsie Featured By Owner Jul 4, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Temptation-Incarnate, here's another lesson in How to Resist Temptation. I rather think that he doesn't resist the temptation to drive Erik spare-er nearly as often as he's stayed out of poorly guarded dreaming minds.

Does Jareth keep at least some of his impulses at bay partly with the hope that someday Sarah will come to him willingly?

I tell you... the depth and development that you have these characters deal with keeps me thinking and wondering and questioning. And it drives me to write more fanfic.
Pika-la-Cynique Featured By Owner Jul 5, 2013  Professional General Artist
Jareth does have some kind of relentless, springing-eternal optimistic hope going on, or at least is a deliberate subscriber to the Power of Belief and willing his own shippy plans for a Happy End to eventually browbeat reality into going along with it. That approach is probably valid in a psychic-sensitive magical kingdom, but unproven in the Building - and nixed so long as "My Will As Strong As Yours"-Sarah doesn't remove him from her own incompatible story template of Sore Loser Fairytale Villain (but she kinda has, near enough). Underneath all that active wishful thinking is, well... the self-loathing despair glimpsed in 'a moment of clarity'. If he doesn't keep up the irrepressible optimist act, the alternative is pretty unpleasant for all concerned. Hope is an essential element to GND-Jareth as-we-know-him.
As to how that interacts with his temptations unto mischief and pervy gratification, well, in the first half of the comic so far, there wasn't that much self-censoring... mostly an irritated weariness at getting yelled at by all and sundry when he is obnoxious that sometimes outweighed the benefits, in his mind. Again, as of that super-important Conversation, Sarah finally managed to ram a wedge of actual empathy through his thick skull and he can now understand when and almost why she gets annoyed at him. From that point on, this new insight (plus his moment of genuine fear he'd pushed her too far one time too many and was utterly screwed) means Jareth is deriving a new flavour of patience, aided and abetted by his natural curiosity, from being good and careful and non-obnoxious and seeing how Sarah reacts to that. (This whole Dark-tempted moment of his aside.) It's a new game for him, and novelty is important - helps keep him intrigued and willing to play slow. Obviously, though Sarah owes him little, it is in her best interests to positive-reinforce this new attitude (and I daresay she kinda has). And Jareth may think he's only play-acting at being decent as a strategically roundabout, tactically-efficient approach to his unchanged goal, but there's the standard catches of Becoming the Mask, and Good Feels Good, which are especially intricate for a Fae character for whom seemings are a much bigger deal than for humans.

You might be seeing some of this better brought to light in-comic soon-ish. ;)
... Yeah, go write s'm'more. :D
Kyndsie Featured By Owner Jul 5, 2013  Hobbyist Writer
Jareth on Hope is the lone option that we'd find palatable long-term? Makes sense. And given that romantic-leaning relationships among humans are FULL of pitfalls and pratfalls, we don't actually have to worry that Sarah and Jareth officially becoming a "real" couple will negate that lovely opposition between them. So even though Sarah has somewhat removed him from her Sore Loser Fairytale Villain template, that doesn't mean that they'll get much forwarder.

He's come too far now to go down the Dark!Jareth path. Actually, he could possibly nearly have gotten away with it in the earlier days of GND, when Sarah expected it. She would have made the best of it, and would have grown to relish the forever power-struggle of it, but neither of them would have really settled into it, as that's not where their characters were headed (predestination of characters in a fancomic? yes please).

This whole How to Train Your Fae is two-sided: How to Train Your Destined-Future Queen (*to accept Fae-nature as Other but not inherently Evil or incompatible; *to accept and reciprocate various attentions, both physical and not; *to accept that Your Fae will live up to or down to your level of trust).

Thought -> action -> habit -> automatic tendency -> lifestyle / behavior... Thus Your Fae is now trained. :D

It's definitely in Sarah's best interest to show positive-reinforcement of the attitudes / behaviors that she likes and wants more of. In fact, their time-skip / non-continuity could also be viewed as a long(ish)-term reward for progress in the right direction. For BOTH of them.

Oooh?? Soon-ish? Yay!!

:salute: First draft of a GND-related / inspired something is nearly done. But other Labyfic stuff has progress. :D
