Description

There really is a whole other show going on in Paris, where Raoul and Arsène are pulling off all these amazing criminal capers that only target the rich and nasty and Raoul is playing the silly socialite and rich idiot with no job and actually getting all the insider info and stuff while Arsène cracks safes and computer code. It'd be a great spin-off. I really should be telling that story instead. Plus, both main characters are public domain and I could actually make money off it...

For the extra literary in-joke, Arsène Lupin was originally written as having a rivalry with "Herlock Sholmès" - Conan Doyle and Maurice Leblanc were alive and writing at the same time, and the weak alias was both to avoid copyright infringement issues aaand because Sholmès was written as a bit of a dick, and outwitted by Lupin. So added to traditional Anglo-French rivalry, they are also opposites in their motives - criminal mastermind and genius detective- and established fictional foils to one another.

Arsène has gotta be peeved Sherlock is getting movie upon movie upon modern retelling and hot Lucy Liu sidekicks. (I think he's getting confused, however, as to where Robert Downey Junior stopped playing Holmes and started playing Tony Stark.)

Irene Adler (Not dead! Not in need of rescuing!!) has already been cross-over'd into the 'Phantom' storyline in at least one published novel - the timeline fits - and is established by Doyle to have a background as an opera singer.

And despite all appearnces, no Drunk!Cheating!Raoul for you LND fans. :D

This is a work of fanart and solely intended for shits and giggles. Not mine, not making money from it.

Christine, Raoul (c) Leroux and Webber

but actually in the public domain by now, the novel at least

Arsène Lupin is a creation of Maurice Leblanc, here somewhat inspired by Romain Duris in the 2004 movie.

Irene Adler (c) Arthur Conan Doyle by way of the 2010 Gatiiss/Moffat BBC adaptation played by Lara Pulver

Am I a literary nerd for guessing she was Irene Adler right off the bat?
