(End of the first day of Monster Hunter interviews, like Christine said; Round Two commencing next week.)

Interestingly enough, depsite the Parisian arc and what with all that memory-wiping going on, this is actually Erik and Raoul's first in-comic reunion...

This is a work of fanart and solely intended for shits and giggles. Not mine, not making money from it.

Christine, Erik, Vicomte Not-Frequently-Appearing-In-This-Comic deChagny (c) Leroux and Webber

Really, Erik was in an impossible situation: not announcing his presence for that call would have amounted to an unjustifiable state of eavesdropping!

Ah, the classic duel-of-words -- biting thrusts sheathed in the most civilised and sardonic of courtesies: my favourite Golden Age movie trope :happybounce:   (Even better than the inevitable swashbuckler follow-up, in which the blades come out for real...)

Honours about even here, I feel, messieurs!

Not quite sure what it says that my first reaction to the second panel is to do a double-take at just how short Christine's skirt is :D
Is this her 'interview clothing'? Or am I imagining that she used to wear them longer?
(If this is Erik's perception, he's clearly not in an entirely disinterested state of affection!)

Plus I actually went to the trouble of transcribing Erik's music-thoughts onto the computer (via a thoroughly user-unfriendly mouse-driven interface) in order to play it back and see if I recognised the snippet:   no, not this time :(

Ouch, poor Raoul: not quite the expression (verbal or facial) one would choose to find oneself addressing to one's longstanding rival. Inadvertently sweet-talking Erik has to be one of the more embarrassing situations to get caught up in! (Although he and Christine don't seem to have that many inhibitions where her flatmate is concerned, so maybe it's not quite that sort of fiery embarrassment for them;  as Sarah complains, they're French...)

One thing I've always enjoyed about this strip is that you show a Raoul who is happily confident about Christine's feelings for him, rather than caught in a state of constant angst and inadequacy: it's a great rarity to get to see the 'normal' side of the relationship -- the characters simply sharing their ordinary lives -- for a change. (Not that I'm complaining about the Parisian Arc; though even there, 'do you love me?' wasn't really the issue in question, was it...?)

I see that Raoul has astutely noted the advantages of residing outside the regular cast (i.e. the Fail-Field...) :p

However, given that one gets the distinct impression that it's Christine who is responsible for the absence of wedding-bells, that particular riposte has to hit home!  (Narrative inertia -- after all, it has been an awfully long engagement -- or deeper insecurities? After all, they're basically living in a state of cross-continental matrimony at the moment.)

Death threats -- however, as Raoul observes, hackneyed in Erik's case -- are not the most convincing method of laying claim to mere 'friendship' with the former lady of one's heart... although for the ex-Opera Ghost, this probably is a reasonably genuine form of friendship. It's not such a very far stretch to imagine him promising the same for Sarah, after all (though I'm not certain I can quite do it).

It does occur to me, all the same, that so far as GND canon goes, Raoul looks statistically far more likely to get 'hurt' in that respect than his fiancee does: on their record so far he has been the one to end up bruised, confused and falsely accused Wink/Razz (Which is slightly amusing, given the context of a 'non-bashing' story...)

I wonder if Jareth is missing those old opportunities for getting his flatmate out of the way by sending him off on wild-de-Chagny-hunts to the yacht club etc?

"Hurt her feelings and I will hunt you down and kill you." Erik sounds like a protective older brother. :D

I wonder... was Christine doing research on the possible interviewees? Expecting a call from Raoul? Planning a movie-night-out with Sarah? (or, you know, checking messages and working on updating her class notes and responsible stuff like that?)

I think it's sweet he's saying "You hurt her, you die." He's like a protective older brother.
