IMPORTANT EDIT I FORGOT: you need a full, pure white Layer underneath your masked lineart. Whoops!
Will fix the tutorial deviation when my software stops bugging on me...

---

Because I've just had about 3 requests for pointers these past two weeks.
Hell, I'm not claiming to some professional level of webcomic expertise nor that this is the bestest and most time-efficient way of doing things, ok?
the screencaps have a slightly harsh contrast, btw.

also, original pencil artwork is on A4 standard paper. Scanned and tweaked with Adobe Photoshop.

Characters used in this demonstration stilll not mine.

can we have a facial expressions tutorial? I feel a bit guilty trying to trace all the great facial expressions I see until I get the hang of cartooning/illustrating.

Shoot, I don't even know how to help or explain. Copying is good - I did a lot of Takahashi SD faces copied from the Ranma 1/2 manga when I started doodling comics - and so is looking carefully at how other artists get such and such an effect - but I think after a while it's gotta start coming instinctively.

I hope it comes eventually....I mean it's frustrating, I'm sitting here like "how on earth am I able to just instinctively know where the shadows and highlights go when drawing something very realistic...yet I can't, for the life of me, make some pretty simple looking cartoons of myself/1 other friend.."
I guess I'll just continue attempting to draw the expressions how you/other illustrators whose comics I read a lot and hope something clicks eventually, and just continue carefully seeing how it's done in all the cartoons I read.
