Artist's Comments

aka Lady Door, of London Below. From Neil Gaiman's trippy NEVERWHERE.

I much enjoyed the novel; I was also rather happy with the BBC serial (and I can't nitpick that, since the series came before the novel, for once!). De Carabas was true dark chocolate eye candy, and so delightfully dry.
Only a friend and I weren't quite entirely OK with the girl cast as Door. She seemed a bit too old, perhaps, with too much of an 80s look to her hair... and I guess not many girls really look "elfin" and have "fire-opal" coloured eyes. (Do NOT get me started on the Angel Islington. The actor had some presence and menace but... um, androgynous beauty? Blond hair? Grey eyes?... Obviously not.)
So anyway, after some debate, I tried to pin down my vision of Door...

[EDITed : I've touched up the sketch--I have a slightly better notion of neck attachments than in my first year... ]

This is great - almost how I imagined her (excluding the layers of clothing, but that's a minor detail).
Brilliant work :)

oooh is this bbc tv version on dvd or video anywhere?!! i'm about a 1/3 of the way through the book, and modeling some artwork in my head. i was perusing devart to see if anyone else had done their own renditions of the characters. i'd like to see this version of the movie when i'm done with the book. i didn't know it was made into a movie. :)

lovely drawing too btw. different than what i pictured but still quite beautiful ^_^

There is a 6-episode BBC TV series, scripted by Gaiman. You can find a link to the DVDs on neilgaiman.com or the Beeb's site... they are also ... around... on the net, but I didn't just tell you that, 'kay? :paranoid:

and thanks!

Nostalgic for 80s fantasy films. When glitter was cheap, monsters were muppets, and Evil was smexy.

I've gotta say that isn't how I pictured Door dressed, I saw it as.......older styles I guess, but it's a fantastic sketch and she looks beautiful. Damn you and your drawings that actually look realistic.
I think I have a jacket like that somewhere.....

The Cornish drolls are dead each one,
The fairys from their haunts have gone,
There's scarce a witch in all the land,
The world has grown so learned and grand.
