  • Reading: the news today oh boy....
I've had a few people sending Notes or mails of concern. Thank you kindly for your care. I have friends and family in Paris who were pretty stressed out today - I don't live in the capital myself. The ''clear and present'' danger seems over, with the shooters killed by police this evening. It's been a long and antsy day with the double stand-offs and the 24-hours news channels and things seemingly shittier by the hour.

As to the whole of the thing, I am still hurting. I hadn't met the Charlie cartoonists, but it feels like there was meant to be a ''yet'' at the end of that sentence, and now the field I work in has become a smaller, poorer place without those [in]famous names, and I will never share a glass of free wine with them at a random BD festival, caught between being star-struck and disapproving. A huge number of my fb contacts and RL friends are fellow comics artists and the wave of anguish and disbelief and blackened profile pictures as the names of the confirmed dead spread was a deeply dispiriting and hollowing experience. Of course it felt like a blow much closer to home than other random shootings or murdered journalists.

I can only helplessly concede Charlie Hebdo was more often than not infuriating, as a feminist, as someone trying to be aware of social justice issues. They were insensitive trolls of massively bad taste. They punched down, yes, frequently; they punched every which way. But the idea that I might never again catch sight, at a newsstand waiting for a train, of their latest ''OMG they did NOT'', eyeroll/snicker/groan/hiss-inducing front page cartoon, was a far greater obscenity and a sense of howling loss. (They're going to keep publishing. They've lost over half the main team and a great deal of their editorial voices&familiar cartoonists, but the paper itself intends to go on for now.)

Facebook since Tuesday has been incessant articles being forwarded, and debates, and sympathetic and angry drawings. The blindingly obvious and oft-repeated, I'll reiterate here: no manner of offensive humour deserves to be met with bullets.

Everything else is so fraught and complex I don't want, can't try and splurge my thoughts here. I haven't made any pithy nor poetic drawing of my own. I went to the first silent vigil and found some solace in the crowd's shared grief, in the immediate aftermath; now I am leery and gearing up for disgust at those who will try and use this for their agendas. I am pre-emptively exhausted from battling the inevitable stupid and hateful, and my own temptations to indulge in such simpler ideas and unfiltered emotional reactions. I am blood-boilingly angry at the kind of flavour of religion that leads to this, and to 16-year-old shitheads in sportswear feeling entitled to talk smack to, and have authority over, their own mothers, because of testes-owning. I am worried because the retaliatory potshots againsts mosques have begun. I am painfully aware that the ''free spirit'' of Charlie that is being celebrated was kinda also that of a bunch of western white guys, yet also I am angrily proud of their utter irreverence and humanity. I am bittersweetly delighted that every other solemn march, every pompous politician's speech, on this affair, is inherently underscored and ridiculed by the very nature and raison d'etre of the dead they are commemorating, because these guys would be having a field day skewering all this and the irony is so very rich, and because the best way to honour them is to laugh at all this and make off-colour jokes about the slaughter and no one can possibly say ''too soon'' or ''inappropriate'' because that is exactly what they would have done and worse. (Like, I am not sure other countries, esp. the US, are quite aware of this aspect of things...) I am fired up because dark humour is one hell of a battleflag. I am elated by how the collective response to this has been a flooding of more biting cartoons and spoof-taking, because this feels like the human spirit is casting a gigantic, united ''Riddikulus!!'' spell at the black-clad djihadist bogeyman. I'm wishing it were that simple and beautiful, that the essence of humanism and resilience and irreverent laughter were what it takes to fight the horrors and break the back of oppressive, hateful obscurantism. I am quietly daring to hope something of this spirit will prevail and transcend the coming political pettiness and divisions in this country, could make thought-ripples worldwide.

oh wait I did slurge, huh.

...Best to all of you, in these ''interesting times'' we are living.

Don't be surprised if the cosplay ears get ahold of your beautiful masquerade designs and exploit them to no means.. Haha But seriously, the costume designs are wonderful! I seriously want Eponine's beautiful dress.

I have a question: If Sarah and Jareth do get together, what will the policy on baby-snatching be? I can't think Sarah would be in favor, but how else is Jareth going to populate his kingdom? Are the goblins immortal? Do they reproduce (ew..)? When I watched the movie, I assumed that where all the goblins came from...babies and children wished away.

Hi Pika! I'm Jojo, and I just wanna say that your comics are hilarious! I know this is probably a big favor to ask, but my birthday's on the 28th, and I was wondering: Could you send me a birthday picture with Anakin and Obi-Wan in it?
Thanks. :)
